Weekend Happenings in Washington, DC

This weekend the big event is the Marine Corps. Marathon which will take place on Sunday. To all my readers and friends running the race -good luck!

For those of us not running the 26.7 miles, some of the highlights of events going on around the city include the following:

  • On Friday, October 23,2009 at noon head over to the National Archives to hear Stacey Bredhoff, museum curator at the JFK Library and Museum discuss President John F. Kennedy's inaugural address. This event is part of the Archives' 75th anniversary celebration. Lecture takes place in the Jefferson Room. Admission is free. The National Archives is located at Constitution Ave. NW, (between 7th & 9th St.), Washington, DC 20408 and the closest metro stop is Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter.

  • MJ fans unite. On Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 6 p.m. head over to Joe's Movement Emporium (3309 Bunker Hill Road, Mount Rainier, MD 20712, 301-699-1819) to join in on Michael Jackson's Thriller Dance. The Emporium is sponsoring an effort to break the Guinness Book of World Records for simultaneous dancing. Rehearsal begins at 6:00 p.m. followed by Reuban Jackson (Associate Curator for the National Museum of American History) speaking on the life and times of Michael Jackson. Then the performance will begin promptly at 8:30 p.m. followed by open dancing until the ghouls are gone. This event is free.

  • On Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 4 p.m. head over to the Newseum and catch The Future of News with Frank Sesno with guests Bob Woodward and Bill Buzenberg. Bob Woodward, an associate editor at The Washington Post, is one of the country's preeminent investigative reporters and non-fiction authors. Bill Buzenberg is executive director of the Center for Public Integrity, an investigative news organization based in Washington, D.C.

  • Get your World Series fix at Politics and Prose (5015 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. 20008). On Sunday October 25, 2009 at 1 p.m. baseball historian Paul Dickson will be in the house reading and fielding questions about his Baseball Dictionary. Dickson will sign books following the Q&A.

  • Plan to attend the National Gallery of Art free music concert. This Sunday, October 25, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. soprano Emma Kirkby and lutenist Jakob Lindberg perform in the West Building Main Floor, West Garden Court
