The Annual High Heel Drag Race at Dupont Circle

by Sheridan Alexander
for About.com

Each year on the Tuesday before Halloween, spectators by the thousands head for 17th Street, between P and S Streets NW near Dupont Circle to enjoy Washington's unofficial, but fabulously raucous High Heel Drag Race. Usually between about 7 and 9 p.m., more than 100 drag queens, dressed in outrageous splendor, parade up and down 17th Street NW. At 9 p.m., the High Heel Race to the finish begins and lasts about 15 minutes.

This unique race is great fun and attracts a diverse crowd from both gay and straight communities. After the race, many of the spectators stay around Dupont Circle to spend the rest of the evening enjoying the vibrant restaurants and nightlife.

This distinctly unofficial wild and crazy event is usually co-sponsored by Delta Lambda Phi Fraternity - Washington DC Alpha Chapter and JR's Bar and Grill.
