Free Things to See and Do in Washington, DC

Washington, DC is so wonderful to visit because so much is free which keeps your budget in check. To follow is some of the fun to be had for free in Washington, DC.

  • The National Mall, Monuments & Memorials
    One of the most beautiful aspects of Washington, DC is the way she pays tribute to America’s heroes through the many moving memorials and monuments along the mall. From the Washington Monument to the Lincoln, Korea and Vietnam Memorials that make-up the National Mall, there is so much to see and take in and all that is required is a good pair of walking shoes.
  • The US Capitol
    The US Capitol, often mistaken for the White House by many a tourist, is a must see and can only be visited via guided tour. Timed tour tickets are available at the Capitol Tour Service Kiosk near the intersection of Independence Ave. and First St. The tour is free but you may want to bring along your pocketbook to purchase souvenirs. The metro stop for the Capitol is Capitol South.
  • The White House
    The White House is said to be the number one destination for visitors traveling to Washington, DC. Touring the White House is free, but it requires planning. Once you've determined what days you will be visiting DC, contact your member of Congress and request tickets to tour the White House. Tours are self-guided and begin at 7:30 a.m. and run until 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
  • The Smithsonian Institution Museums
    The Smithsonian Institute is comprised of sixteen museums that highlight the American experience. The National Air and Space Museum houses the Spirit of St. Louis, and many famous airplanes and spacecraft that delight visitors young and old. The National Museum of Natural History with its dinosaur and gemstone exhibits is a favorite among young children. The National Portrait Gallery is filled with artwork for the art connoisseur, and those are only a few of the things visitors will get to see. All of these are accessible via metro.
  • The National Zoo
    The National Zoo is a favorite spots for both parents and children. The giant pandas are a main attraction with the panda cub Tai Shan being the star of the show. A walk to the zoo can be fun, but if you prefer to metro you want the Woodley Park Zoo metro stop.
