Ice skating is something the whole family can enjoy and Washington, DC has some of the best outdoor ice skating rinks around. The city offers plenty of places sprinkled through its historic neighborhoods where you can lace up your skates and take a spin around the rink. To follow are several of my favorite venues.

National Gallery of Arts Sculpture Garden Ice Skating Rink

There is no place finer for skating figure eights than at the National Gallery of Arts Sculpture Garden Ice Skating Rink. For $7, $6 if you’re under 12, you can view incredible sculptures and take in the sounds of the city as you skate around an open air rink.

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-11 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-12 a.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

Skate Rentals are $3.

Pershing Park Ice Skating Rink

Or why not try an evening skate at Pershing Park Ice Skating Rink? Located just two blocks from the White House at 14th St, NW and Pennsylvania, Pershing Park is the perfect place to go after enjoying the lighting of the National Tree at the White House Pageant of Peace. After skating to an eclectic mix of music, head over to the Willard Hotel to cap off the night with a cup of hot cocoa or an Irish coffee.

Hours: Open daily from October 15th through mid-April from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Admissions: is $6.50 for adults and $5.50 for children and seniors.

Skate Rentals are $2.50 and they also offer lessons.

Pentagon Row Ice Skating

Pentagon Row offers a wonderful outdoor ice skating rink where mom and dad can sip Starbuck's coffee rinkside as the kids go round and round on the ice. After you've had your fill of skating, head over to shops like the Denim Bar for some trendy Seven or Rock and Republic jeans or satiate your appetite at one of the many fine restaurants.

Hours:Sunday 10 a.m.–7 p.m. or 9 p.m.* Monday Noon-10 p.m. Tuesday Noon-10 p.m. Wednesday Noon-10 p.m. Thursday Noon–7 p.m. or 10 p.m.* Friday Noon–10 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m.-11 p.m.

*if there are Ice Rentals they will close at 7 p.m.

Admission: Adults are $8 and children and seniors are $7.

Skate rentals are $3.
