National Mall in Washington, DC

By Karen Hart, About.com

The National Mall is a national park in downtown Washington, DC. It extends from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol grounds, past the Jefferson Memorial to Constitution Avenue. It is considered the home of many of the national monuments that pay tribute to the men and women who helped write the story of America.

It is estimated that the Park receives over 24 million visitors each year. This is easy to imagine when you consider that the Vietnam and World War II veterans’ memorials as well as the Korean Memorial, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the Washington Monument are all part of the National Mall. Additionally, the Smithsonian Museums flank either side of the park which creates a convenient sightseeing venture for Washington, DC visitors.

But the National Mall offers so much more. Many festivals and events take place on the National Mall including the July 4th birthday bash celebrating Independence Day; the presidential inauguration; protests; summer’s Screen on the Green and so much more.

The National Mall is accessible by Metro, with the Smithsonian station located on the south side of the mall.
