St. Matthew Cathedral is a Catholic Church located in Washington D.C. on Rhode Island Ave. According to Catholic Online, St. Matthew, who was a tax collector before he converted, is the patron saint of accountants and bankers.
St. Matthew Cathedral is best known as the church where President John F. Kennedy' funeral was said on November 25, 1963. Pope John Paul II also celebrated Mass at the Cathedral in 1979.
The "Red Mass," is celebrated at the Cathedral annually in the fall with the intentions of the Mass focused on the legal profession. At the Red Mass at St. Matthew Cathedral members of the US Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court often attend. The Red Mass gets its name from the color of vestments that the clergy wears.
St. Matthew's Cathedral is filled with wonderful art, architecture and history. The Cathedral is incredibly beautiful and ornate on the inside with spectacular murals including 'Martyrdom of St. Matthew' and 'The Calling of St. Matthew'. The yellow, green, red, white and purple marbles that run throughout the cathedral add to its grandeur and the artwork throughout the church is awe-inspiring.
