White House Christmas Ornaments look beautiful on a Christmas tree and make great souvenirs and gifts for family and friends. This tradition started in 1981 during the Reagan Administration with the first ornament fashioned after a weather vane. Mrs. Reagan hung the ornament on the tree in the blue room. Since 1981, each year for the past 29 years, a new White House Christmas Ornament has been designed and sold to the general public.
About the 2009 Ornament Design
The 2009 White House Christmas ornament commemorates the only president of the United States elected to two non-consecutive terms, Grover Cleveland. Christmas at the White House under Cleveland was dubbed a “Children’s Festival” with a wonderful focus on family. It was during Cleveland’s presidency that the first electric lights were used to light the Christmas tree.
Where to Buy
The best place to buy the current and past years’ ornaments is through the White House Historical Association website and should run you no more than $17 for the current year’s ornament.
