Looking to go off the beaten path in Washington? This is you guide for unique sites in the nation's capital.
1. National Building Museum
One of the most interesting and off-the-beaten-track museums in Washington is the National Building Museum at 401 F Street, NW. It's not part of the Smithsonian collection of museums and you won't find it on the National Mall, but it's the place to see everything from a Lego version of the Empire State Building to finding out if you can actually build your own structure with large blocks.
2. National Geographic Museum
Don't you just love the photos in National Geographic Magazine? The publication that's known for its beautiful photography also puts some of its photos on display at a small museum in the ground floor of its headquarters building. It won't take long to make your way through the exhibits but it's worth a look if you're in the neighborhood.
3. National Museum of Health and Medicine
Anyone interested in medicine and the history of it will love the National Museum of Health and Medicine. It's on the campus of Walter Reed Army Medical Center. But once you get through security (don't forget your picture ID), it's well worth the visit.
4. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum
Chances are you’ll never meet a celebrity or a professional athlete, much less a present or former U.S. president. But you can at least see what it feels like to stand next them at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Washington.
