September is one of my favorite months to visit Washington, DC. The crowds thin with so many families headed back to school. Early in the month it is still warm but around mid-September it often turns into true Indian summer weather, which makes for a beautiful vacation.

What To Pack

  • Light sweaters for the evening
  • Long pants and shorts
  • Ball cap
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunscreen

September Happenings

During the month of September there are plenty of festivals and events for visitors to enjoy. Some of the Highlights include the following:

  • Kennedy Center Prelude Festival. Throughout the month enjoy free performances and festivals. One of the most notable is the Page to Stage this event gives visitors an opportunity to see free performances. Events run throughout September 2009.
  • Black Family Reunion On Sept. 12-13, 2009, noon-8 p.m. on the National Mall.
  • Alexandria Festival of the Arts. Sept. 12-13, 2009.
  • September 11 Memorial Events.
  • The DC Shorts Film Festival. Dates to be announced.
  • National Hispanic Heritage Month. Sept. 15-Oct. 15, 2009.
  • Mount Vernon's 18th-Century Craft Fair. September 19 & 20, 2009, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • National Book Festival. Sept. 26, 2009, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. National Mall, Washington, DC.

Things to Consider

  • Most of the summer activities and events will have concluded.
  • While it is not peak travel time for visitors to DC, it may be difficult to find good deals.
