For a fun family day-trip during your Washington, DC vacation, these full scale theme and water parks offer great thrill rides and entertainment. Driving from downtown Washington varies from about 20 minutes to two and one-half hours, although rush hour travel should be avoided. Morning and evening stop-and-go traffic between Washington and either Baltimore or Richmond can add an hour or more to your trip.

Six Flags America

  • Location/Directions: About 30 minutes east of downtown Washington, D.C., just outside of the Beltway. Take I-495 to exit 15A, Central Avenue East and Six Flags America is located about 5 miles on the left.


  • Description: Conveniently located within easy reach from downtown Washington, D.C., Six Flags America offers more than 100 rides, slides, shows and attractions and features eight thrilling roller coasters. During its operating season, Hurricane Harbor Water Park activities are included in the price of your theme park admission.

Kings Dominion
  • Location/Directions: 75 miles south of Washington, D.C. and 20 miles north of Richmond, Virginia, just off Interstate 95 at Exit 98.


  • Description: Kings Dominion is a 400-acre theme park that is home to more than 200 rides, shows and attractions. The park brings Hollywood entertainment to the Mid-Atlantic with one of the largest coaster collections on the East Coast. Admission to the park also includes entry to Nickelodeon Central and Kidzville for children, as well as WaterWorks a 19-acre water park.

Hersheypark - Hershey, Pennsylvania
  • Location/Directions: 140 miles north of Washington, D.C. Take I-95 North to I-695 North to I-83 North towards York and Harrisburg. Approaching Harrisburg, follow signs to continue on I-83 North. I-83 North to 322 East. Follow 322 East to Hershey. Alternate route: Follow 270 North to Frederick, MD and 15 North. 15 North to 581 East to I-83 North and Harrisburg. I-83 North to 322 East.   • Description: Milton S. Hershey opened Hershey Park in 1907 as a picnic and pleasure grounds for his employees. In 1971, it became a theme park and the name was changed to Hersheypark. Comprised of 110 acres, this delightful park offers more than 60 rides and attractions, including roller coasters, water rides and East Coast Water Works, the largest water-play structure in the world, and more than 20 kiddie rides.

Busch Gardens - Williamsburg, Virginia
  • Location: 150 miles from Washington, D.C., near Williamsburg, Virginia.
