Imagination Bethesda at Woodmont Ave. between Elm St. and Bethesda Ave.; 301-215-6660; bethesda.org. Saturday, June 7, 2008 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Looking for some fun for the younger kids? Imagination Bethesda is a free street festival with them in mind. Some of the fun includes face painters, balloon artists, clowns, and stilt walkers. Plus there will be high school theater groups and professional dance groups on hand to entertain audiences and Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream to keep you cool.
Jacob Lawrence Family Tree Festival at the Philips Collection, (1600 21 st St, NW; 202-387-2151) June 7-8, 2008, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information visit phillipscollection.org. This festival is a part of the Dupont Kalorama Museums Consortiums Annual Museum Walk Weekend and features 60 panels that depict the story of the 20th century exodus of more than one million African Americans from the rural South to the Urban North. As part of the fun there will be shadow puppetry, collage making, exhibition tours, and interactive dance performances.
Alexandria Waterfront Festival, Oronoco Bay Park in Old Town, (701 N. Lee Street, Alexandria, VA; 703-549-8300); June 14, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and June 15, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This event benefits Alexandrias Red Cross chapter and is a day filled with fun. From amusement rides, tall shop tours, crafts, live music and fireworks, this is a day the whole family will enjoy. Toad the Wet Sprocket will play June 14. National Capital Barbecue Battle on Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. between 9th and 13th Streets in Washington, D.C. June 23-24, 2008 beginning at 11: 00 a.m. The Barbecue Battle is A fun and taste bud pleasing BBQ competition between local BBQ restaurants and those from around the country, and includes cooking demonstrations, free food samples, interactive cooking displays and children's activities. This festival also features the National Pork Championship, where barbecue-obsessed teams from across the country compete for over $40,000 in cash and prizes and the coveted title of National Barbecue Champion. Tickets are only $10 per adult, $5 per child 6-12 years old, and younger children enter free.
