Oktoberfest in DC: Eins, Zwei, Drei, Vier, Lift Your Stein & Drink Your Beer

Oktoberfest--which is the result of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria wanting to celebrate his marriage and has morphed into a world celebration of German culture--offers drink, music and dance for the the whole family to enjoy, as well as an opportunity to break out the Lederhosen or whatever your favorite German gear might be. With its many festivals throughout the DC metro area, Washington, DC is a great place to celebrate this annual event and all the fun that comes with it. Here is a sampling of some of the events in and around the city:

Fort Meade Oktoberfest. September 17 through September 21. Fort Meade Pavilion. 301-677-3912. www.ftmeademwr.com/events/Oktoberfest. Food, Fun and Oompah are theme of this festival and with 22 carnival rides, lots of great food and beer, how could it not be? Admission is free.

Germantown's Oktoberfest. October 4 through October 11. Ridge Road Recreation Park. www.germantownoktoberfest.org. This is the 26thanniversary of the Germantown festival and it is probably one of the best in the area. Plenty of beer, fireworks (although not done together), dancing, live music, food and fun for the whole family. Admission is free.

Mid-Atlantic Oktoberfest. October 4, 2008. Capitol City Brewing Co. Willage at Shirlington. 703-578-3888. www.capcitybrew.com/octoberfest.php. This day long celebration at allows Capitol City Brewing Co. to highlight some of their best German beer. Cost is $25.

Bloktoberfest at RFK Stadium. October 4, 2008. RFK Stadium. Washington. DC. http://www.blocktoberfest.com/. This is a big event with lots of rides, food, fun and music for the whole family.
