Virginia Gold Cup is like a rite of spring in Washington, DC. It is as much a harbinger of the season as it is a must on everyone’s social calendar. Women shed their winter clothing and don their Jackie-O sun specs, wide rimmed hats and A-line sheaths in a grand tradition of the thrill of the horse race. This year marks the 84th running of this world famous steeplechase at the Great Meadows in The Plains, VA.
Since 1922 Washingtonians have enjoyed this popular sporting event. Race day features seven hurdle and timber horse races, Jack Russell Terrier races, tent, tailgate and hat contests, a parachute demonstration and over 30 vendor booths. And with over 45,000 people in attendance, this is a place to see and be seen. Pack a picnic and blanket and enjoy a day at the races.
