Monument Highlights: The Washington Monument, standing at a height of 555 feet, is the tallest structure in Washington, D.C. Made of marble, granite and sandstone, this gleaming and dignified obelisk serves as a symbol of the nation's gratitude to George Washington for his enduring contributions to liberty and democracy. The interior of the monument contains 193 memorial stones, contributed by organizations, cities, states and countries from around the world.
Visitor Information:

  • Location: Located on 15th Street, SW and Constitution Avenue at the National Mall.
  • Hours: 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
  • Closed: Closed Dec. 25.

  • Admission: Admission is free.

  • Timed tickets are required to enter the monument for all visitors 2 years of age or older. Same-day, timed tickets are available at the 15th Street kiosk on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 8:30 a.m.
  • Advanced tickets are available through the National Park Service Reservation System at 800-967-2283. Reservations may be made between the hours of 10:00 am and 10:00 pm. for a $1.50 service charge and a $.50 shipping and handling fee.
  • Public Transportation: The Metro stop is Blue / Orange Lines - Smithsonian
    Parking: Limited two hour parking is available off of Constitution Avenue near 15th Street and on city streets during non-rush hour times. Long-term parking is available along Ohio Drive under the 14th Street Bridge.
    Accessibility: The Washington Monument is wheelchair accessible.
    Other: The Washington Monument is administered by the National Park Service. Park Rangers are present on the site everyday except December 25.
    Special Note: The following items and activities are prohibited within the Washington Monument: Smoking, eating including the bringing in of food items, drinking (except water in a clear plastic container), guns and ammunition, knives, aerosol cans or mace, baggage or packages larger than 18 x 16 x 8 inches, strollers, animals. There is no storage provided by the National Park Service.
