Located on the first floor, the Crypt houses the display cases that chronicle architectural and historical events of the Capitol, as well as an original sandstone Corinthian column from the East Front of the Capitol and four models of the Capitol showing proposed and final designs of the building.
The room is a large circular area with forty Doric columns and sandstone arches, which support the floor of the Rotunda and the nine ton iron dome. The center star on the floor represents the point from which the streets in Washington, D.C. are laid out and numbered, making this exact spot the true physical heart of the capital.
