March is filled with festivals and fun in Washington, DC. From celebrating the national cherry blossoms to the soaring kite festival on the national mall to the Easter Egg Roll at the White House, the city is filled with excitement for the whole family. So if you are planning on being in the District during the month of March, mark your calendar.

Festivals & Special Events

  • The National Cherry Blossom Festival begins March 29, 2008 and runs through April 13, 2008 with the parade on April 12, 2008. This festival which includes fireworks and a concert, symbolically welcomes spring to our nation’s capital. Thousands of blossoms grace the tress on the Tidal Basin as visitors flock to see them bloom. Tickets for grand stand seating for the parade are available.

  • The 42nd Smithsonian Kite Festival takes place on March 29, 2008 kites fly high at the Washington Monument as kite flyers compete and show case their kite flying skills. Festivities take place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. depending on the wind and weather.

  • The annual White House Easter Egg Roll will be held on March 24, 2008 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the South Lawn of the White House. The National Park Service will distribute free tickets on two dates for entry to the South Lawn. The majority of tickets will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2008 and a small allotment of tickets will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, March 24, 2008.

Sporting Events

  • March 30, 2008 kicks off the opening day of baseball season for the Washington Nationals at their new ball park. The first game of the season will be played against Atlanta. Tickets can be purchased online.

Concerts

  • Friday, March 14, 2008 at 7 p.m. the Jonas Brothers along with Rooney with rock the Patriot Center (4400 University Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030). Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster.

Fun for the Kids

  • Go, Diego, Go Live! The Great Jaguar Rescue will be at the Warner Theatre (1299 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20004) from Friday, March 7, 2008 thru Sunday, March 9, 2008. Tickets range from $16 to $46.
