Getting Started

The National Portrait Gallery

Karen Hart
The journey starts at the National Portrait Gallery. The building was once the old US Patent Office where Walt Whitman worked. And during his tenure, the building also served as a make shift hospital where Whitman helped tend to wounded soldiers. When you arrive at the National Portrait Gallery, go inside and view Whitman's portrait as well as those of many other US writers and historic figures.
