Georgetown History: Originally named George Town in honor of King George II, this historic area was first established in 1751 as a Maryland tobacco port. As prosperity flourished, Georgetown's residents built large and impressive homes, many of which are still beautifully intact. During the 1960's, the world's fascination with the Kennedy family drew added attention to Georgetown and the lives of its many socially elite residents.
Georgetown Today: Today, Georgetown offers visitors an abundance of nightlife, dining and shopping options, as well as a variety of historic tours and listed buildings to explore. A few of the most popular sites include Dumbarton Oaks, the Old Stone House, Georgetown University and one of Washington, D.C.'s most picturesque treasures, the C & O Canal.
