Teddy Roosevelt Memorial

By Karen Hart

Theodore Roosevelt’s Island is one of the most overlooked sights for Washington, DC visitors. Located across the Potomac River from DC, it is a wonderful place to bring a picnic lunch; take a leisurely hike; and simply enjoy old Teddy’s legacy of conservation.

Theodore Roosevelt, our twenty-sixth president, was known as a naturalist and outdoorsman and this very airy memorial is a fitting tribute to his passions. The 17-foot bronze statue of Roosevelt nestled in a wooded-area and towering over visitors juxtaposed to the tranquility of the trickling fountain makes for an awe-inspiring experience. Additionally, four stone monoliths etched with some of TR’s most famous quotes, form a perimeter creating a memorial plaza. The island’s 2.5 miles of trail make for an easy walk/hike for visitors.
